I had to blog on this as I really have felt very sad last couple days. I am hoping this helps get some of my feelings out and maybe I will feel better. It is hard to imagine that beautiful voice will never sing again, his creativity no more.
Since the time of owning any type of MP3 technology playing device I have always had Michael's music on my player. Ive used it for exercising, working out, my long walks. When I needed a nice beat to move my feet along, he was always there. I can still remember the day that my best girlfriend and I went to the mall to buy the Thriller Album the day it came out. We brought it back to her house and we just listened to it probably about 20 times. I was so amazed with him back then and always have been. Something in him grabbed every teen girl at that time. I was not immune to it myself, but his music felt good, he was so handsome, and it was Hhe only album I ever remember getting that excited to buy and listen to. He was my youth and perhaps that why this is also so hard on emotions. I still have this Thriller Album.
I enjoyed all his music. I loved his dancing, and I have always felt when he sang he was not just singing, his entire soul, body, and mind were in each song. He was ever so present in his songs. Watching his music videos and the stories in them, during those 4-7 mins, you felt as if what you saw was as true as real life.
I have poured over all my songs in my Itunes last couple days. I love them all. However, the one that I seem to really connect with right now is his "Earth Song". It didn't make me want to dance, which I didn't feel like doing with this sad news, it didn't make me want to sing along with him either. It just made me feel feelings very deeply. Not only about him and his music, but about the things that were important to him outside of his entertaining career. The world, the environment, animals, earth, people. It's all in this song.
I am surprised when I mention this song to many people they did not know of this piece. This song is very intense and the video is even more intense. I can feel every word in this song he just didn't 'sing', he felt it. When I see his music videos, it never feels as if he is just performing, he is rather 'living'. He is feeling every word of his songs very deeply. This is why he was such an amazing artist. I can't help but be tremendously moved by this intense song.
What else can I say about what I feel was an amazing artist. I am lucky to have grown up with his music, extraordinary talent, creativity, and true artistry. Although his life sadly filled with personal turmoil, in my mind, did not take away from what he brought to me with this music. On my most down day when his music came on, it undoubtedly lifted me up. He will be missed and he will always reside on a play list on my itouch.
Here are the Lyrics:
What about sunrise
What about rain
What about all the things
That you said we were to gain.. .
What about killing fields
Is there a time
What about all the things
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the blood we've shed before
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores?
Aaaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaaah
What have we done to the world
Look what we've done
What about all the peace
That you pledge your only son...
What about flowering fields
Is there a time
What about all the dreams
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the children dead from war
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores
Aaaaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaaaah
I used to dream
I used to glance beyond the stars
Now I don't know where we are
Although I know we've drifted far
Aaaaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaaaaah
Hey, what about yesterday
(What about us)
What about the seas
(What about us)
The heavens are falling down
(What about us)
I can't even breathe
(What about us)
What about the bleeding Earth
(What about us)
Can't we feel its wounds
(What about us)
What about nature's worth
(ooo,ooo)
It's our planet's womb
(What about us)
What about animals
(What about it)
We've turned kingdoms to dust
(What about us)
What about elephants
(What about us)
Have we lost their trust
(What about us)
What about crying whales
(What about us)
We're ravaging the seas
(What about us)
What about forest trails
(ooo, ooo)
Burnt despite our pleas
(What about us)
What about the holy land
(What about it)
Torn apart by creed
(What about us)
What about the common man
(What about us)
Can't we set him free
(What about us)
What about children dying
(What about us)
Can't you hear them cry
(What about us)
Where did we go wrong
(ooo, ooo)
Someone tell me why
(What about us)
What about babies
(What about it)
What about the days
(What about us)
What about all their joy
(What about us)
What about the man
(What about us)
What about the crying man
(What about us)
What about Abraham
(What was us)
What about death again
(ooo, ooo)
Do we give a damn

what a moving and fitting tribute.
ReplyDeleteDenise, your tribute to Michael Jackson is perfect. Such a brilliantly talented, and tragically flawed individual! We were all so blessed to have had his musical genius shared with us over the years. He really will be missed.
ReplyDeleteI love the video for Earth Song. It has long been one of my favorites, however I have never seen the video - very powerful. Thank you.
